Usain Bolt... Who says tall athletes are slow? 40 yard dash lessons...

The past couple of evenings I have watched Usian Bolt sprint some serious fast times on the track at the Beijing Olympics. Or should I say jog... He makes it look so effortless.

Bolt set a world record of 9.69 sec. in the 100m and let up with a couple of yards to go. Now that is fast!

What is so special with Usain Bolt?

Well for starters he is one of the taller sprinters ever to post times like he has. At 6'4" and 200 lbs. Bolt is a unique athlete compared to most other sprinters that are usually on the shorter side.

What can we learn from this for the 40 yard dash?

I often hear coaches and athletes say that tall athletes pop straight up and are not as fast as their shorter counteparts. Well, Bolt's performance in Beijing proves that tall athletes can be fast.
In watchng and studying the video, his stride length far exceeds his competitors. His stride frequency is just as fast as the others... This is a recipe for speed. As Ato Bolden said on tv, Bolt is a FREAK!

So if you are tall and feel you need to work on your speed, use your stride length to your advantage. Work on your flexibility, power and explosiveness. Often tall athletes lack proper acceleration technique, so work on firing out lower out of your start then using that great stride length when you are finishing your acceleration phase and reaching top speed.

On of the best devices I use with my taller athletes is my Speed Tools Speed System (http://www.speedtoolsusa.com/speed-system.php) This has everything you need to become fast. A speed resistor to work on your acceleration, a speed chute to work the top speed phase and a side stepper ankle tubing to work on your hips and stride. What more could you want?

All this with a great deal on shipping.

Start your path to getting faster today!
