40 Yard Dash Arm Mechanics

One of the common errors I come accross when trying to teach an athlete the proper technique for the 40 yard dash is arm action. Too often I see athletes that run by flapping their arm like they are in a karate class.

You see, this is wasted movement, it does not propel the body forward, it does nothing but waste time and energy.

The proper movement for the arms is to swing from the shoulder joint with the arms bent at a 90 degree angle travelling from the hip to the eye. The hands should be open, and the athlete should think of firing their rear delt and the opposite front deltoid muscle when running.

This is the most efficient and effective way to move the arms for 40 yard dash improvement.
